Patrolled by desperate gunmen looking to capture any vessel that strays into their path, the waters off East Africa are among the most dangerous in the world. With Somali pirates continuing to make headlines, this timely documentary tells the story of the US container ship Maersk Alabama, which was stormed by bandits in April 2009. With the captain taken hostage, the unarmed crew made the remarkable decision to confront the gun-toting invaders in a brave attempt to save their skipper and the ship. Now, using dramatic recreations and interviews with the crew and their families, this exclusive one-hour special reveals the incredible events that took place over those few days.
This documentary reaches to the depth of Somali history, starting from the strong kingdoms that ruled areas far away into Africa, passing by the Portuguese raids and ending with its division into five colonies ruled by different European forces, leaving the people of the same race and language separated by geographical borders. It addresses problems of civil war, chaos, theft, and mass destruction. It also focuses on valuable attempts by national organizations to resist occupation and foster peace.

The film provides a close look at how the nomadic inhabitants of Somalia have withstood the ravages of a harsh desert environment and the encroachment of European imperial forces by synthesizing knowledge of the past, Muslim practices, and skillful livestock management in a successful fusion of traditional values with modern techniques.
"Black Hawk Down: The Official Documentary" (formerly titled "Somalia: Good Intentions, Deadly Results) is the uncut version of the CNN program co-scripted by Mark Bowden, author of the companion book. This Emmy Award-winning program takes you behind the lines of battle and includes chilling US military radio transmissions, Pentagon video clips and interviews with soldiers and commanders on both sides of the conflict.
In this pretentious attempt to combine documentary scenes of Somalia's past and present economic and human tragedies with a highly personalized, private monologue, director and writer Frederic Mitterrand (nephew of François Mitterrand) becomes too self-absorbed and overly sentimental to pull off the experiment. Beginning with scenes of an unmade, empty bed, the narration reveals that a lover has just split for good, yet an assignment to cover events in Somalia has to continue. Those "events" include on-going starvation and disease, refugee camps filled with the human detritus of desert warfare, and interviews with Somali militarists -- raising the issue of exactly what type of personal narration could ever successfully play off the somber and depressing Somalian conflicts -- the very concept itself seems doomed from the beginning.
